According to a study by the American Dental Association (ADA), tartar is a leading cause of dental issues, particularly around the gums, as it harbors harmful bacteria that affect oral health.

What is Plaque and Tartar?
Tartar (also known as calculus) forms due to the development of bacteria and calcium salts present in saliva, combined with the accumulation of plaque over time. These tartar deposits are thick and hard, making them impossible to remove with regular brushing.
Tartar is classified into two types:
Salivary Tartar
- Found on the tooth surface, between teeth, and along the gums.
- This type is usually pale yellow, light brown, or reddish-brown due to calcium salts in saliva adhering to the plaque.
Subgingival calculus
- Appears on the tooth surface, between teeth, and below the gums.
- Subgingival tartar is more rigid and dark in color, often causing severe gum inflammation.
- Subgingival tatar
Why is Tartar Removal Necessary?
Tartar is a major cause of several harmful effects on both oral and overall health:
- The color contrast between tartar and the natural color of teeth, combined with red, inflamed gums, results in an aesthetically unpleasing smile.
- Bacteria present on tartar and plaque are the primary cause of bad breath. They also contribute to enamel and dentin erosion, leading to cavities.
- In the early stages, tartar can cause gingivitis, characterized by swelling, puffiness, and bleeding gums. However, gingivitis can be fully treated by removing tartar and maintaining proper oral hygiene.
- In more advanced cases, the presence of tartar can lead to gum recession, pus in the gums, loss of tooth-supporting bone, periodontal disease, and, in the worst case, tooth loss, significantly affecting chewing ability and appearance.
- Persistent infection from tartar can create conditions that may trigger systemic health issues such as cardiovascular diseases, respiratory problems, and diabetes. Studies also suggest that excessive plaque, tartar, and gum disease during pregnancy may increase the risk of preterm birth.
How Often Should Tartar Be Removed?
According to dental professionals, it is recommended to have tartar removed every 3 to 6 months. You should not wait until tartar buildup becomes noticeable before visiting the dentist.
The most common method of tartar removal is ultrasonic scaling, which uses high-frequency sound waves to break down tartar without causing pain.
How to Prevent Tartar Buildup?
Maintaining proper oral hygiene is the best way to prevent tartar and plaque accumulation:
- Brush your teeth properly and use fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss regularly to clean between your teeth.
- Rinse your mouth with diluted saltwater frequently.
Adjusting your daily diet can also help:
- Eat more fiber-rich foods, which help clean your teeth and strengthen your gums.
- Follow a healthy diet and limit sugary foods.
- Avoid soft, sticky foods like cookies, gummy candies, and chocolate, as they adhere to the teeth and are difficult to clean off.
