Dental Filling

Dental fillings are a simple and effective treatment for cavities, favored by many for their quick procedure time and cost-effectiveness.

1. What is Dental Filling?

A dental filling is a technique in which artificial materials are used to restore missing portions of a tooth structure. This method enhances aesthetics and partially restores chewing function.

2. When is Dental Filling Needed?

2.1 Filling Cavities

Tooth decay is often caused by unhealthy eating habits and inadequate oral hygiene. If left untreated, cavities can grow larger, leading to pulpitis, infection, and eventually tooth loss.

Signs of cavities include:

  • Visible holes in the teeth
  • Discoloration (brown or black spots) on the tooth surface
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold foods
  • Sudden, sharp pain

To eliminate these discomforts and restore the tooth’s appearance, schedule a dental filling appointment with your dentist to fill the cavities.

2.2 Repairing Chipped Teeth

Chipped or cracked teeth can result from biting down on hard objects or being subjected to strong impact.

If the damage is minor, your dentist may recommend a filling to restore the tooth’s original structure.

2.3 Closing Gaps Between Teeth

Dental fillings can be used to close small gaps (less than 2mm) between teeth.

For larger gaps, options like veneers, crowns, or orthodontic treatment may be necessary to ensure optimal aesthetics.

2.4 Replacing Old Fillings

Over time, filling materials can wear down, chip, or fall out completely. If this happens, your dentist will recommend replacing the filling.

3. Dental Filling Procedure

The filling process is quick, typically requiring only one appointment.

Step 1: Examination and Consultation

The dentist will examine the affected tooth, assess the extent of the damage, and discuss suitable filling materials with you.

Step 2: Cleaning and Preparation

The area is cleaned thoroughly, and local anesthesia is applied. For cavities, decayed tissue is removed, and any food debris or tartar is cleared away.

Step 3: Filling Application

The dentist places the filling material into the cleaned cavity and uses a curing light to harden it.

Step 4: Final Check and Finishing

The dentist evaluates the filling’s quality, often using X-rays if necessary. Adjustments are made to eliminate excess material, and the surface is smoothed and polished to prevent discomfort.

Post-Filling Care

First 24 Hours

  • DO NOT eat or drink for the first 2 hours to allow the filling to fully harden and set, minimizing the risk of dislodging the material.
  • DO NOT consume hard or chewy foods, as they may cause the filling to loosen or fall out.
  • DO NOT eat foods that are excessively hot or cold to prevent discomfort and sensitivity.
  • DO avoid strong impacts on the filled tooth or using it to bite down on hard objects or foods that require excessive force.
  • DO gently bite down to check for any high spots on the filling. If you notice unevenness, inform your dentist immediately for adjustments.
  • DO chew on the opposite side of the filling to ensure it sets completely without disruption.

Daily Care

  • Oral Hygiene: Brush twice daily and use dental floss to remove food particles from between teeth.
  • Food Choices: Limit consumption of carbonated drinks and dark-colored beverages like coffee or tea to prevent discoloration of the filling. Avoid extremely hot or cold foods to reduce tooth sensitivity.
  • Prevent Grinding: Teeth grinding can wear down or damage fillings. If this occurs, visit your dentist to address the issue.
  • Regular check-up: Visit your dentist every 6 months for a comprehensive oral health checkup and to monitor the condition of your fillings.
