Dental problems can happen unexpectedly, but knowing when to seek professional care can help prevent complications and improve the chance of preserving your natural teeth.
Whether you are at home or travelling in Nha Trang, the following five situations should not be ignored.

1. A Knocked-Out or Displaced Tooth
A permanent tooth knocked out during an accident is a time-sensitive dental emergency.
Hold the tooth by the crown, avoid touching the root and, if dirty, rinse it gently with milk or saline without scrubbing. If possible, carefully place it back into the socket without forcing it. Otherwise, keep it in milk or a suitable tooth-preservation solution and seek dental care immediately.
Never attempt to reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth.
2. A Broken or Cracked Tooth
A tooth can fracture while chewing, during sports or following an accident.
Even if there is little pain, a crack may expose deeper tooth structures or worsen under chewing pressure.
Contact a dentist promptly, especially if the tooth is painful, sensitive, sharp or significantly damaged.
3. A Lost Filling, Crown or Dental Restoration
A missing filling or crown can leave the underlying tooth exposed and vulnerable to sensitivity or further damage.
Avoid chewing on the affected side and keep the restoration if it has come out. Do not use household glue to reattach it.
A dental examination will determine whether the restoration can be repaired, re-cemented or needs replacement.

4. Persistent Toothache or Oral Swelling
Tooth pain may be caused by deep decay, infection, a cracked tooth or inflammation of the dental pulp.
Seek prompt care if you experience:
- Severe or persistent toothache
- Pain that wakes you at night
- Swelling around a tooth or gum
- Pain when biting
- Fever or an unpleasant taste associated with swelling
A dental abscess requires professional treatment and should not be managed with painkillers alone.
5. Jaw Pain or Facial Injury
Jaw pain may be related to muscle tension, temporomandibular joint problems, dental infection or trauma.
If you have difficulty opening your mouth, persistent jaw pain or pain following an injury, arrange an appropriate assessment.
A suspected broken jaw, significant facial trauma or rapidly increasing swelling requires urgent hospital care.
When Should You Go to a Hospital?
Seek emergency medical assistance immediately if you experience difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, serious facial trauma or swelling that is rapidly spreading toward the neck or eye.
These symptoms may require hospital-level assessment rather than waiting for a dental appointment.
